Description

The Rising to Run program is an innovative program designed to empower women of color and New American women who have previously run for office and lost. This comprehensive program includes a pre-training virtual session, a three-day intensive in-person training component, and post-training support.  Recognizing that the first campaign often serves as a critical stepping stone for building name recognition and establishing a presence in the community, Rising to Run offers a supportive environment where participants can reflect on their past experiences and transform them into actionable insights.

Rising to Run in Phoenix, Arizona

  • In Person Training Dates: May 2nd-4th, 2025

How much does the Rising to Run program cost?

The registration fee for the Rising to Run program is $150. Scholarships for registration are available and can be requested during the application process. For those attending the training outside of their metro region, hotel and travel scholarships may also be available. Please note that hotel lodging will be in shared rooms with another participant. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee scholarship assistance for all applicants. If you receive an acceptance email without scholarship mention, you will be responsible for all costs.

The travel scholarship comes in the form of a stipend up to $300 to be sent via check or direct deposit to the participant AFTER completion of the training. The participant must send a  W-9 and receipts from travel costs to receive the stipend. If submitting a W-9 or the upfront payment for travel would be a barrier for you, please reach out to NAL as soon as possible at programs@newamericanleaders.org.

What can I expect to learn in the Rising to Run program?

Participants will gain valuable skills and insights tailored to those who have previously run for office and lost. Key topics include processing emotions from past campaigns, which can often feel akin to experiencing grief or loss, and crafting effective campaign messaging and branding. Participants will also develop comprehensive campaign strategies and establish accountability partnerships for future runs. The program aims to create a supportive environment to help you transform your experiences into actionable insights.

What should I bring to the Rising to Run program?

Bring an open mind, a notebook or digital device for taking notes, and any materials that may help you reflect on your previous campaign experiences. We also encourage you to bring your previous stump speech for analysis during the training and any other material that will be provided to you in the virtual sessions.

Will there be free time during the program?

Yes! While the Rising to Run program is structured and busy, there will be scheduled breaks throughout the day, and evenings after group activities will be free time for participants to relax and network. However, you should not plan to have any sight seeing time during the program days. If you would like to do any exploring or tourism activities, please consider extending your stay before or after the program dates.

Why should I apply for the Rising to Run program?

You should apply if you are a woman of color or a New American woman who has previously run for office and is considering another campaign. The program is specifically designed to help you build on your past experiences and prepare for future success. Or if you want to join a program that can help you build camaraderie and bonds with other women that have also had to go through this past traumatic experience.

What if I don’t want to run for office (yet)?

That's perfectly fine! Rising to Run is designed to provide you with valuable skills for various paths in public leadership, including working on campaigns, community organizing, or other forms of civic engagement, even if you’re not ready to run again right now.

How can Rising to Run help me develop my leadership skills?

Throughout the program, you will engage in activities to practice public speaking, develop your personal narrative, and learn how to effectively connect with voters. You’ll also have opportunities to network with experienced leaders and gain insights from their journeys, which can inspire your own path forward.

Who can apply for the Rising to Run program?

The program is specifically designed for women of color and New American women who have previously run for office and experienced a loss. We encourage individuals from these backgrounds to apply, as long as you are committed to increasing representation and inclusivity in politics.

Is Rising to Run right for me?

If you are passionate about creating a more inclusive democracy and want to learn from past experiences to prepare for your next campaign, then Rising to Run is right for you. The program offers the skills and network to help you succeed.

How can I apply for scholarships?

Indicate your request for financial assistance in the application form and provide a brief explanation of your need for support.

Can the program cover my travel expenses?

We offer a limited number of scholarships to assist with travel and lodging costs. If you believe these expenses may be a barrier to your participation, please complete the scholarship section of the application.

The travel scholarship comes in the form of a stipend up to $300 to be sent via check or direct deposit to the participant AFTER completion of the training. The participant must send a  W-9 and receipts from travel costs to receive the stipend. If submitting a W-9 or the upfront payment for travel would be a barrier for you, please reach out to NAL as soon as possible at programs@newamericanleaders.org.
